Course Motivation

Reiki is one of the contemporary world's fastest growing healing methods. This is due to the fact that people are becoming more health conscious and are aware that disease prevention is much better and much cheaper than treatment. Reiki is an effective form of disease prevention.

Reiki does not always effect change as rapidly, but often is able to get equal or better results without the invasiveness or side effects sometimes applied by contemporary physicians. There is no denying that medical surgery often necessary however it is extremely invasive and often unnecessary when prevention is applied in a timely fashion. This is something that is really unnecessary in many cases. Reiki, like some other noninvasive healing forms, has the power to drastically reduce the need for invasive treatment, even though it really was done with the best of intentions.    When surgery is necessary reiki serves as an effective complementary treatment which reduces the effects of surgery.   Reiki also promotes healing when used with many other forms of traditional allopathic medicine and thus is an effective complementary therapy.

Reiki and Energy

The word 'energy' is used a lot in Reiki. Well, what does this really mean? The first thing to understand is that, although this is in no way anti-scientific, the way we approach this is not really same in Reiki as it is in some kinds of science. In this sense, Reiki is more like psychology in that we know that what we are referring to is real, but it is not really true to say, "It is all just the brain firing neurons…there is nothing more to concepts than this."

So, on one level we can think of 'energy' in terms of the atomic structure of all matter here on our planet. There is no reason to concern ourselves with off-world energies at this time, but the same rule may well apply. All of the time our existence consists of atoms. There is no other background nor underlying energy than atomic particle structure…well, okay, this is very 'soft physics' as subatomic particles have been found, but there is always something holding all this matter together. Your flesh is made up of atoms, the air is atoms…that tree, and even photons from the sun can be viewed as pretty much the same as atoms. Now, this is not meant to destroy the complexity of life. Even so, all atoms are in fact connected to different levels of intensity. As you probably know, molecules are groups of atoms in specific relationship to one another: no matter what you get 2 Hydrogens attached to 1 Oxygen atom with a certain kind of connection and then 'poof' you get water.

You and every person, animal and plant you know and do not know are all made up of predominantly the same elements. In this case I am referring to the Periodic Table of Elements. You and all the rest of life are made mainly of the atomic element Carbon, along with our friend H2O ergo, water. Now, it is equally safe to say, that we are all also made of Sunlight, since the most strict empirical scientists have determined that about 1% of 1% of the power from the Sun is enough to fuel all of the life of this planet along with holding the planet well within the gravitational orbit of it. So, whether the sunlight is influencing the amount of light, or gravity, or simply pouring it onto the plants so they can grow, Sunlight is another core feature of planetary energy and life. Vegan, vegetarian or omnivore, whatever your diet: you are living off of some type of transformed sunlight with different kinds of carbon molecules combined in any of hundreds of thousands or more varieties along with more water. This is what you are, and it is what you eat.

Being aware of that, you now have some way to connect with the truth of this 'energy' that goes through everything and yet is part of everyone. That is not the only way to understand what is meant by 'energy' in Reiki. Another good way is to simply be aware of interactions and how they work. Notice how subtle some of them are, and how others are larger. One example of this is how we are affected by tone of voice and by how sensitive we may be about what another person wants. We can notice this when walking in a large crowd, for example. The way one moves through a crowd reveals how the individuals in the crowd are interrelated through position and how one person's motion interacts with that of numerous other people's. Another example is even with respect to knowing whether an individual, especially if it is a baby, or a loved one, may want to touch, or may need a hug. The level of one's sensitivity to such a desire or need influences the extent to which it affects one's own behavior, one's emotions and one's mind. The influence of such details may be simultaneously delicate and powerful. Forces of interpersonal attraction, and especially the power of sexual attraction in adults are other types of 'energy' that exert a wide array of effects on the over all state of humans and other life forms. All of these intentions and natural influences can be said to fit well within what is indicated by the term 'energy' as well.

Of course all the other natural biological functions are also covered by the word 'energy'. When you simply take a holistic approach to the entire myriad of these active powers and operations within life you get the meaning of the word 'Reiki'.

It is normally translated into English as "Universal Life Force".

The healing art of Reiki, involves attuning to the vast wealth of this abundant and pervasive energy. Trained Reiki healers learn to open themselves to this energy in its raw form, and allow it to pass through them, especially through their hands and onto or into the patients. How this is done may seem a bit contradictory because it is very simple, yet the whole practice of how to apply the healing in order for it to be most effective is not quite as simplistic as it at first seems.

The purpose of this course is to provide a reasonably thorough introduction to the art. In this first one so far we have addressed the basic definition of the word Reiki. Normally, this word is pronounced "Ray-key" in English. The word itself is Japanese. Next we will look at what this art means.

First, it is a healing art. By this it means that Reiki is used to alleviate and to cure a variety of ailments that can afflict people. It is useful for the full spectrum of human difficulties, which means that you can use it to help heal a bruise, and Reiki can be used to help someone to feel better when he or she has been upset, and you can use it to cure mental and emotional ailments even if they were chronic or severe.

Secondly, Reiki is a noninvasive kind of healing. Other examples of noninvasive arts are chiropractic and acupressure. In both of these an understanding of the human body and physical contact are used to manipulate, that is to move the body around in ways that facilitate its coming back into balance. In the case of chiropractic this gets quite intense and the type of balance sought is typically mainly physical. Talk therapy is another kind of noninvasive method. Reiki is very different from both of these, in that there is very little direct physical contact but a great deal of energy is moved nonetheless. As we proceed through the course we will rely on this fundamental understanding. However, one of the gifts of Reiki is that it does not require a particularly intellectual attitude in order for it to work. Of course it is also okay if you like to have just such a type of understanding of this amazing art!

As mentioned above, the healing is delivered through touching. There has been a long tradition in history that to be touched a definitively spiritual person has incredible healing power, and this is why some people have been known to have a 'Miraculous Touch' including both the Buddha and Jesus Christ (according to some). Dr. Usui was initiated through Nature herself, but in Christian terms it might be better understood to say that it was the Holy Spirit that gave the Dr. this direct knowledge of how to perform Reiki healing though he was a practicing Buddhist..
