Andrew Lawton, who teaches ESL Students: Learn American Grammar and Conversation Skills, has a Masters in Spanish and Second Language Acquisition and is currently an ESL and Spanish instructor. The goal of his course is for a student to finish each unit feeling that he can speak and understand a typical American when they are talking about something that pertains to the focus of the unit. For example, after the unit on shopping students should feel comfortable asking for something in the store and speaking with the cashier who checks them out.

Students will not need extra materials for this course except for an English dictionary. Students will be asked to do some work on the internet to check for "real life" uses of the target vocabulary in the lessons.

Earn a certificate (both hard copy and electronic) upon successful completion (additional charges apply). UniversalClass™ offers many wonderful learning tools to help you get the most out of your online course, including an online portfolio service that manages all your course completions.

This course will get English as a Second Language students closer to sounding fluent when they speak. The lessons focus on everyday situations in the United States that a speaker would face. People learning English often are able to communicate what they want to say, but struggle with their choice of words. Sometimes the student uses a word that is too formal and sometimes they use an expression that nobody says anymore. This sounds awkward. In both situations the person listening is distracted and may not get the full message the speaker is trying to convey. These lessons will help a student like this choose appropriate vocabulary in a given situation with the goal of sounding more fluent.
