This course is ideal for students with a serious interest in the short story genre and in creative writing.  It is unique in that it uses different methods to learn and become better authors.  The combination of traditional lessons and teaching, writing exercises and creative thought, and reading and studying short stories allows students to learn in a variety of ways.

Course Description

This class is an in-depth study of short stories and how to write them.  It covers different elements of short stories, and looks at how writers can improve their use of each element.  Students will be reading and discussing short stories.  There is an emphasis on learning through practice, and so students will be completing writing exercises and writing short stories.
 
This course is ideal for students with a serious interest in the short story genre and in creative writing.  It is unique in that it uses different methods to learn and become better authors.  The combination of traditional lessons and teaching, writing exercises and creative thought, and reading and studying short stories allows students to learn in a variety of ways. 
 
All students with an interest in the subject matter and a proficient level of written English are welcomed to the course.  Most students will have had some previous writing experience.
This course offers 1.0 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation. An online and hard-copy Certificate of Course Completion displaying your coursework and CEUs earned is included with the CEU Option. Course Lessons

  1. Story Structure - One of the hardest parts about writing can be putting all of the elements together into a cohesive story. This lesson examines how to structure a story.
  2. Dialog - Dialog is an important tool for short story writers. This lesson will look at examples of dialog and how to improve our dialog writing.
  3. Setting - Short stories do not exist in a vacuum. The setting--the time, place, and culture--that they occur in is a vital part of the short story. This lesson looks at how to effectively create settings.
  4. Point of View - The point of view that a story is written from can mean the difference between a mediocre and a great story. Learn the different points of view and how to use them.
  5. Characters - This lesson explores the role and importance of characters within short stories, and examines techniques of creating characters.
